Editor's Verdict:

Yahoo! Personals is a very popular dating site from the world's second most popular search engine providers, Yahoo! As a trusted named brand, Yahoo has attracted over 10 million members to its personals site since its launch in 1997.

Yahoo! Personals offers a free standard membership, in which you may access many of the site's features and browse profiles in full, but as a free member you may not email any other members or initiate contact in any way. In order to email another member and access all the site's features you must upgrade to one of the two premium membership services: Yahoo! Personals, for casual relationships; and Yahoo! Personals Premier, for serious relationships. This pretty much corresponds to the silver and gold membership options offered by many other sites, with the Yahoo! Personals Premier option costing more and giving you more features than the standard Yahoo! Personals membership. The chart below shows how these services stack up against each other and against the free standard membership. Each of the premium services comes with a 7-day free trial. Although before you can access the free trial, you will need to hand over your credit card details. You may cancel at any time within these 7 days and your card won't be billed a single cent. But if you don't cancel, then you will automatically transfer to the premium membership of your choice after 7-days and your card will be billed accordingly.

A comparison of the different membership plans available from Yahoo! Personals

The premier option is marketed as the one to go for if you're looking for a serious relationship, as it comes with added features (and also requires added dollars to subscribe to it!) Many other dating sites offer a similar thing, though most other sites call it silver and gold membership. However, the difference between Yahoo's standard and premier membership plans differs somewhat from other sites silver/gold plans. Most other sites' gold memberships will get your profile listed higher in the search results, will give you more features and a more advanced set of search parameters, meaning that if you sign up the gold membership, you have a better chance of finding a date. Makes sense, right? But with Yahoo, signing up to the Premier plan doesn't mean you have a better chance of finding a date, it just means that you're looking for a different type of relationship. Indeed, you can only search the Premier member profiles if you are yourself a Premier member, so this in effect inhibits the number of people who can search for you by restricting them to just other Premier members. We can see what Yahoo are trying to do here - they're trying to segregate those who want a serious relationship from those who just want a bit of fun. And for many women in particular who are tired of being bombarded by never ending one-liners from lots of hopeful guys, this may seem like a good thing. But is it really a good thing to separate the two? After all, most serious relationships start out as casual relationships with both members just looking for some fun, and then it develops from there. So it's up to you to decide - is this a good thing or not?

Our favourite feature of Yahoo Personals was the fact that as a free member you may choose from 16 different ice-breaker messages to send. These pre-written one-liners allow you to be a lot more expressive than a mere wink or a smile, which is all you can do as a free member on most other dating sites! These ice-breakers include one liners like a simple "Hi!" to "Wanna grab a coffee?", "We have a lot in common don't you think?", "I read every word of your profile. I'm intrigued, let's chat" and "Where's you favorite place to hang out?". Much better than a simple wink, don't you agree? Hopefully Yahoo will add a few more of these one-liners as time goes by.

The only downsides we could find to Yahoo! Personals was that there is no chat room and no forums on the site. Many other dating sites include these features and they benefit from them by making you feel like part of a vibrant online community. Hopefully Yahoo will include these features at some later date. There are also many ads on the site, from banner ads to sponsored listings. However, this doesn't intrude on the navigation of the site and is just a minor complaint.
