  • Genealogy.com has been used by many celebrities to trace their family trees, and you may explore their family trees if you wish, which can be quite interesting. These celebrities include:
    • Heather Locklear
    • Shania Twain
    • Pamela Anderson
    • Brad Pitt
    • Donald Trump

  • On Genealogy.com you can create a tree, save it, and search for entire branches of your family tree with the click of a mouse. Retracing research steps is unnecessary with this facility.

  • Use the Family Finder on Genealogy.com to search for ancestors using the names of the family members you're searching for.

  • Use the Site Search to find keywords at Genealogy.com. With this facility you can type the name and place of birth, e.g. "James Willis, Oklahoma " .

  • The Social Security Death Index helps verify deaths and death locations. It requires the first and last names and the dates of birth and death.

  • Membership provides all the tools and resources you need to make your research both productive and fun. You'll get:
    • Easy-to-use Family Tree Maker® software.
    • A wide variety of data
    • Expert tools and tips

  • Genealogy.com provides a Virtual Cemetery which is an electronic memorial to your ancestors and an invaluable source of genealogical information. To locate a tombstone in the Virtual Cemetery it is necessary to provide information regarding the relevant deceased person in the fields shown (as many or few fields as you like, depending upon how much information you have at your disposal). You then fill in the relevant information on the relevant cemetery and press click! You're away! It's as easy as that. Thanks to researchers like you, the Virtual Cemetery is always growing. You can also add your own images to the cemetery.

  • GenForum message boards allow you to read and share all kinds of information with other family researchers. You can easily find the messages you need by creating your own My GenForum page. These message boards are the ideal vehicle for exchanging views and ideas with other genealogists, making the whole process altogether more sociable, expanding your horizons and maybe even meeting a distant relative from across the world!

  • Navigation of Genealogy.com is very user friendly with its menu bars at the top of the screen with easy accessibility to all the information you could possibly need.

  • Genealogy.com has a world family tree which contains thousands of other family trees which you can download to your computer.

  • A Genealogy Library is available which contains a comprehensive collection of birth, marriage and deaths with over 300 million names.

  • Genealogy.com's chat is a free service where you'll find people like you who are interested in finding out more about their family's history. People from all over the world with a wide range of genealogy experience come here to meet and offer each other assistance.

  • Genealogy.com offers free genealogy lessons from experts in the field of genealogy.

  • The Learning Centre is excellent and extremely comprehensive with instructions on

    • Deciphering Documents and Handwriting. One common barrier in genealogical research is the difficulty of reading the handwriting on old documents. There is a handwriting expert on hand offering some tips and techniques that can help you decipher what you see.

    • Finding Female Ancestors. When you can't look up a female ancestor by her maiden name (or you don't know what it is) what do you do? Well you read this site! Everything you need to know is here.

    • Oral Histories. Getting an oral history from one of your relatives is often the easy part. But would you know how to extract what's genealogically relevant from your tapes and notes, and preserve the stories and lore for future generations? Well this site tells you how!

    • Researching where your ancestor lived. Have you ever thought to look for your family in town and county histories? You'll often find fun and interesting details about your ancestors. Learn where to find these records and how to evaluate what you learn.

    • Looking outside your family for clues. Sometimes you'll learn about your direct ancestors by researching siblings, church groups, ethnic groups, and neighbors. Learn why this is true and follow along on a research journey.

    • Ideas to help you over the brick wall (This facility should prove to be of vital importance to any genealogist who may reach a dead end and have no idea of the way forward). You're taken gently by the hand and shown how to work around any problem you may encounter along the way. Problems like bigamy, disowned children and name changes are addressed in this section.

    • Researching your medical history. Genealogy and genetics spring from the same root word, and it's no accident. While we usually think of genealogy in terms of personal relationships, it's also important to pay attention to patterns of disease within your family. This section shows you how to compile your family's medical history.

Editor's Verdict:

Genealogy.com is a comprehensive website offering all the information any budding or experienced genealogist would require. As the building of a family tree can be a long and frustrating process, we would recommend the Gold option since this is the only one that offers the full library of information and also the only one offering free technical support.

In our opinion the free access to the experts found in Genealogy.com is one of the prime reasons to use this website. These guys have been there and done it all and are willing to share their experiences with you so why not take advantage of this facility which could advance your searches in leaps and bounds.
