Editor's Verdict:
eMusic has a huge array of songs from well-known established bands as well as from emerging artists, and the on-line album and single reviews are an excellent way to guide you through the myriad of music on offer from this site. The site is one of the few major music subscriptions sites to offer you all its music in the unprotected MP3 format, so you can keep all the tracks you download forever and play them on all your digital music players - from your iPod to your PC. Alternatively, burn all your downloaded tracks to CD and take them with you. However, you're limited in the number of downloads you can make to 40, 65 or 99 mp3's a month, depending on the package you buy - see the "Cost to join" section opposite for a complete cost breakdown. This works out as $0.22 to $0.25 per MP3, which is great value for money and much cheaper than the competition, so why is eMusic in 5th place in our list? Well, we found some gaping holes in the catalog listings for eMusic, meaning that we often couldn't find the songs we were looking for. This is partly because eMusic has just around 1 million songs online (compare that to the 1.5 million offered by Real Rhapsody and Napster!) and partly because eMuisc seems to target "emerging" bands a lot more than some of the other services offered here, who tend to focus almost entirely on "established" bands that you're more likely to have heard of.
If you're at all undecided about eMusic then sign up for the free trial offer with no obligation whatsoever, check out the site and download your favorite 25 songs for free to keep forever. This is one of the simplest sites to use and download from with no small print and no hidden restrictions on your listening pleasure!
